Sister expresses disappointment at police officer's actions after accident

IPOH: "If you want to put him in a lockup, that's fine... It's not his right to do what he did to my brother."

These were words from Nur Zawani Muhd Zamrie, 28, whose younger brother died after his motorcycle was crashed into by a car driven by a senior police officer.

The incident near SMK Jati in Meru, here, yesterday grabbed headlines and led to Malaysians expressing their concern.

Nur Zawani, who is a nurse, hoped that there would be justice for her 17-year-old brother Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie even though the perpetrator who caused his death was a police officer. She had also rushed to scene when Zaharif was fighting for his life due to injuries.

"My brother is still a teenager who is just about to get to know the world. Again, he is the youngest and the favourite child, and he is the only one who is still in school," she said when met at the Forensic Department of Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB), here.

"Even if he (the police officer) did something wrong, he should come and see my parents. If you want to put him in a lockup, that's fine... It's not his right to do what he did that to my brother," she said.

Recalling the moment when she was at the scene of the incident, Nur Zawani said she coincidentally near the area and tried to give first aid to Zaharif.

"At the time of the incident, I was near the accident site and was surprised when I was told by the public that the victim of the accident was my own brother.

"I held him in my arms. I really tried to save him. I did CPR when I first arrived there. At that time, my brother was still alive but he didn't respond," she said.

Their father, who is an ustaz, had also ended up at the accident site and tried to help Zaharif to recite the 'syahadah' (oath affirming one's Muslim faith).

She said her parents didn't have the heart to attend the post-mortem process due to extreme sadness.

"My mother and father didn't have the strength so that's why they didn't attend it, especially my mother," she said.

Zaharif's body was claimed by his family members after the post-mortem process completed around 6.30pm yesterday. He was buried at the Kampung Kepayang Luar Muslim cemetery, here.

The police officer involved in the incident has been remanded for three days to facilitate investigations.
