Malaysia applauds Japan's Azec energy initiative

TOKYO: Malaysia sees Japan's Asia-Pacific Zero Emissions Coalition (Azec) energy initiative as a great step forward in fostering mutually beneficial cooperation within the region.

Commending Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's efforts, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed optimism at Japan's commitment towards climate action and being energy efficient in a meeting with other Asean leaders on the final day of the Asean-Japan Summit.

Anwar said Japan's role is crucial as a facilitator for a longstanding platform in energy transition, especially within the region.

"Malaysia is optimistic that Azec will serve as a long-standing platform promoting mutually beneficial cooperation in energy transition, particularly in our region," Anwar said.

He highlighted that Malaysia is committed to practical solutions that drive progress, emphasising the delicate balance between climate ambition, sustainability, and economic growth in addressing the energy issue.

"Malaysia will continue to pivot on practical solutions that drive progress, balancing climate ambition, sustainability and economic growth as we address the energy trilemma," Anwar said.

Anwar noted that Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), launched in August, draws inspiration from initiatives like those proposed by Azec.

Emphasising the principles of justice, inclusivity, and equity in energy transition, he said Malaysia underscored the importance of a progressive cooperation and collaboration model.

"We believe that energy transition should be just, inclusive and equitable. The way forward includes a progressive cooperation and collaboration model.

"Addressing challenges and opportunities in clean energy, while ensuring a just transition, requires a broad support particularly on financing, incentives, technology, and infrastructure."

Looking ahead, Anwar added Malaysia extends a welcome to continuous support and cooperation from nations like Japan, Australia, and others, as they strive to accelerate their energy transition journey.

Anwar is set to attend the remaining concluding events of his five-day working visit to Japan today.

The itinerary includes two key engagements, the Azec leaders' meeting and a gathering with the Malaysian Diaspora.

The Azec leaders' meeting took place at 10am (local time) at the Japan Prime Minister's office earlier.

It is a collaborative platform aimed at advancing carbon neutrality and energy transition to achieve zero emission targets.
