Ilham Tower seizure: Let MACC do their job, says PM

KUALA LUMPUR: Do not interfere and let the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) carry out their investigation without fear and favour.

That was the response by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when asked to comment on the move by MACC to seize the Ilham Tower yesterday - a building owned by the family of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin.

Anwar said the MACC and the country's judicial system must demonstrate that it is brave enough to investigate and take action against individuals and groups involved any form of corruptions, including those involved in large-scale graft.

"Let the MACC carry out their duties. As I said on numerous occassions, all individuals, including if you are a 'Tun' and a 'Tan Sri', will not escape investigation (for alleged involvement in corruption)

"I do not want people to accuse us (the government or the authorities) of only going after the small fries but not the big fish.

"And I do not want them (those involved in major corruptions) to think their untouchable by using their influence and the media especially social media," he told reporters here today.

Anwar added that he does not want the people to criticise his administration for not being able to take action againt those with position but were involved in corruption.

"If it is a big secret that this person has been allegedly involved in embezzling major wealth.. let them be investigated.

"I do not want people to assume that we are protecting those involve in major corruptions," he said.

Anwar also urged all quarters to avoid making unnecessary assumptions on the MACC probe into the case.

"Do not jump to any conclusion that there must be a (political) scheme whenever someone with position is being investigated.

"If they really had commited the offence or otherwise, let the system and investigation take its course," he said.

Yesterday, the MACC seized a building owned by the family of Daim.

The seizure notice of the 60-storey building, dated Dec 18, and was published as an advertisement on a local news portal.

It was signed by MACC deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib and made under Section 38(1) of the MACC Act 2009, addressed to the Property Rights Registrar, Lands and Mines Office of the Federal Territories.

Earlier, Anwar spent almost 30 minutes minggling with the people and had lunch at the Nasi Ayam Warisan KD in Kota Damansara here.

In tow were Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Kota Damansara assemblyman Muhammad Izuan Ahmad Kasim as well as former Selangor PKR vice-chairman and former Sungai Buloh member of parliament R.Sivarasa.

Anwar later proceeded to join thousands in a congregation to perform the Friday prayers at the Kota Damansara Mosque, about one kilometre away from the restaurant.
