About 7 million, or 85 pct of domestic consumers in Peninsula Malaysia unaffected by electricity tariff adjustment

KUALA LUMPUR: Eight five per cent or seven million domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia are not affected by the adjustment to the electricity tariff from Jan 1 until June 30 next year.

The Energy Commission said 99 percent or 8.2 million domestic users will also continue to enjoy subsidies from the federal government.

It said the surcharge will remain for non-domestic users.

The commission said that based on the adjustment of the subsidies implemented under the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism from Jan 1 until June 30, 2024, the federal government has set aside RM1.9 million in subsidies for different categories of electricity consumers.

The allocations, the commission said, was to minimise the impact on users throughout the implementation of the ICPT mechanism.

"Users can refer to their respective monthly electricity bills to monitor the usage of power and subsidies given to them (by the federal government).

"In addition, users can also make estimation of their monthly electricity cost in the future using the electricity tariff calculator which is accessible at https://myelectricitybill.my/.

Earlier today, it was reported that some 1.2 million households, whose electricity bill comes up to at least RM220 a month, would see an increase of between 4.2 per cent and six per cent in their monthly bill from Jan 1, 2024.

Such a move is expected to save the government RM266.2 million in subsidies.

In an announcement today, the Energy Transition and Public Utilities Ministry said domestic consumers who use between 601kilowatt per hour (kWh) and 1,500 kWh a month, will no longer be eligible for the two sen per kwh rebate under the government's ICPT mechanism for the period of Jan 1 to June 30, 2024.
