New 'Bumiputera Bertindak' committee formed to address governance issues in UiTM

KUALA LUMPUR: A newly formed independent committee, Bumiputera Bertindak, has been established to address operational matters, misconduct allegations, governance violations, and wastage within Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

In their statement, the committee underscored its pivotal role as monitors and whistleblowers, committed to safeguarding institutional integrity.

This proactive step is in response to concerns raised in the recent National Audit Report, shedding light on financial losses in UiTM Holdings and governance weaknesses.

"We are actively planning measures to ensure a thorough investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

"The Bumiputera Bertindak committee aims to prevent cases under MACC investigation from being categorised as NFA (No Further Action), indicating potential interference hindering the progression of these cases.

"We strongly assert that such interference has eroded trust in the institution's integrity, leading to a 'crisis of trust.' This is also our dedication to transparency, accountability, and restoring confidence in UiTM's governance," the statement read.

The inauguration of the committee is led by former student leaders and university alumni which includes former minister Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed.

The committee believes that such stringent action will set an exemplary standard for UiTM Holdings, encouraging greater caution in future business dealings, and discouraging the abuse of power for personal gain.

"It is our hope that this will also serve as a reminder of the original purpose of establishing UiTM Holdings — to be an 'Investment Arm' benefiting UiTM rather than causing harm."

Additionally, the committee is planning to conduct an open briefing with UiTM alumni regarding various public issues involving UiTM at the end of January 2024.

Subsequently, high-level meetings with various parties also will be organised.
