Contraflow lanes to Singapore to ease congestion operational next week, say transport minister

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Contraflow lanes for vehicles exiting the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex at Bangunan Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) towards Singapore will be in full operation by next week.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook who visited the complex here today said the government received approval for the lanes to go into operation after the lanes were equipped with the Mobile Foreign Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) control system.

He said although it was a short-term solution yet it was necessary to meet urgent needs to address heavy congestion from Johor to the republic.

The activation of the contraflow lane through the current 12 immigration counters, would enable 36 counters to operate simultaneously, facilitating travel efficiency while reducing congestion during peak-hour and weekends.

"For the long-term solution, a permanent VEP system will also be developed and operated in the contraflow lanes," he said, adding that the system is expected to commence operations no later than the end of this year.

He added that the entry and exit lanes for vehicles into Malaysia through the CIQ Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) and KSAB have been fitted and operated with the VEP and Road Charge (RC) systems.

"Through the VEP system, all Singapore-registered vehicles entering Malaysia will have their information recorded.

"The VEP system also has the ability to record the details of all vehicles, including foreign or Singapore-registered vehicle entering and existing the country, which includes Malaysia-registered vehicles," he said.

The contraflow-lanes are equipped with the mobile system VEP camera, which are able to record the vehicles passing-through in or out of the country.

Also present during the visit were Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah and State Works, Transport, and Infrastructure Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh.
