Sarawak aims to take over another entity to boost entrepreneurship sector

KUCHING: Sarawak is expected to progress further this year as the state government is aiming to take over another entity that will boost its business and entrepreneurship sector.

Without disclosing the entity involved, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the taking over will be announced in a month or two and it is one of the three major organisations which will be fully owned by the state this year.

"There are three entities we are going to take over this year. The first one (Bintulu Port) was done, the second one will be announced soon, and the third one is of course, MASWings Sdn Bhd. Then (after taking over), we will have the whole economic system for Sarawak," he told reporters here today (January 12).

In his speech at the Amanat Perdana Premier Sarawak 2024 programme, Abang Johari hinted that there will be good news for the local businesses and entrepreneurs as the state government is planning to help them.

"I just cannot announce it today. We have to have strategic entities for us to move forward.

"We once applied for a digital bank licence but it was not approved. So, I think this is a blessing in disguise for us," he said.

In 2022, it was reported that Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) did not approve the application by the Sarawak government to obtain a digital bank licence. — Bernama
