PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin will lead the Malaysian delegation to the the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit and Third South Summit of the Group of 77 and China (G77+China) in Kampala, Uganda from January 17 to 22.
The Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) said Uganda, as the Chair of NAM (2024-2027) and G77+China (2024), will host both summits – under the themes "Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence" and "Leaving No One Behind", respectively.
"Malaysia is an active member state of NAM and a founding member of G77+China. Both organisations remain crucial platforms to advocate for the interests of developing countries, including that of Malaysia, on issues of geopolitical and geoeconomic importance," the statement read.
According to Wisma Putra, the Deputy Foreign Minister will deliver Malaysia's Statement during the General Debate of the 19th NAM Summit and Third South Summit.
Malaysia will call for enhancing unity and solidarity among developing countries of NAM and G77+China and strengthening multilateralism, it said.
Mohamad will also touch on key global and regional issues, including Palestine, the South China Sea, Islamophobia, 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, climate action and reform of international financial institutions.
As a member of the NAM Ministerial Committee on Palestine, Malaysia will also make a strong representation of its position on Palestine, it said.
Malaysia will advocate for Palestine's right to self-determination and nationhood based on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, and hauling Israel to face justice for genocide and crimes against humanity committed against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, it added.
The Deputy Foreign Minister's presence and Malaysia's consistent participation in NAM and G77+China illustrate Malaysia's steadfast commitment to strengthening South-South Cooperation, said Wisma Putra.
"This presents an opportunity for Malaysia to explore collaborative efforts through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP), which is under the purview of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," it added.
Mohamad will also meet with his counterparts, including from the African region, signifying the importance of that region, and to take stock and strategise bilateral relations with related countries. — BERNAMA
