Building in KL's heritage area now an eyesore

KUALA LUMPUR: Tourists have expressed concern about the deplorable condition of a heritage building which has been abandoned for some years.

The former Chartered Bank of India, Australia, and China building, which is located next to Dataran Merdeka here, is an eyesore.

Licensed tourist guide Mohd Khaidir Abas shared his disappointment regarding the neglect of a historically significant building on Facebook.

He said the structure, built in 1909, showcases Mughal influences and intricate teak wood domes.

"After the Chartered Bank moved to a new building, this heritage building has served as various offices, including the District and Land Office, Department of Islamic Affairs of the Federal Territories, National History Museum and more.

"However, today, this heritage building is left neglected in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, a focal point for tourists from both within and outside the country.

"I don't know how to answer when I get questions from tourists who love heritage buildings like this. Aren't the authorities doing something to restore this historical heritage building?" he said.

Accompanying his post were photos showing the building's neglect. Rubbish has been accumulating in one part of the building following its abandonment.

He urged the Selangor government, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the Heritage Department to take immediate action on the matter.

"Please do something so it can become a proud historical monument once again for Kuala Lumpur residents as well as for Malaysians. Please take action."
