Selangor announces new water tariff rates

SHAH ALAM: Selangor has established new water tariff rates for over eight million people, encompassing 2,661,743 accounts.

The rates apply to both domestic and non-domestic users, spanning from small businesses to multinational companies.

This follows the adjustment of water tariffs by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), which will take effect on Feb 1.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said that the domestic category includes low-cost houses, condominiums, estates, and government quarters.

He mentioned that the minimum charge for domestic users will increase from RM6.00 to RM6.50.

"For houses using up to 20 cubic metres of water, the charge per cubic metre will increase by eight cents to RM0.65, starting from 0 cubic metres up to 20 cubic metres.

"The new rate for houses using water up to 35 cubic metres will increase by RM0.29 to RM1.32 per cubic metre.

"For water consumption exceeding 35 cubic metres, the new rate is RM2.63 per cubic metre, compared to the old rate of RM2," he said in a statement.

Amirudin said that for condominiums, the bulk minimum charge remains at RM173 per month, and the new rate will increase by 30 cents to RM1.68 for each cubic metre of water usage.

"For estates and government quarters, the new rate will increase by 68 cents to RM1.68.

"For low-cost houses, it is RM0.98 per cubic metre of water, the lowest charge and the smallest increase for all residential categories, namely an increase of 18 cents per cubic metre," he said.

Meanwhile, he said, the non-domestic category involves places of worship, government institutions, and commercial residences.

"Places of worship and government institutions are given a flat and lowest rate, with an increase of six cents per cubic metre to RM0.66.

"For commercial companies and other non-domestic buildings, the new transition rate is RM2.70 for water usage of up to 35 cubic metres, while usage exceeding 35 cubic metres incurs a charge of RM2.94 per cubic metre.

"In addition, for the shipping category, the new rate will change from RM7.00 to RM7.08," he said.
