Pas warns against political motivations: Urges MACC to ensure fairness in Dr Mahathir's son case

KOTA BARU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) recent move against a former Prime Minister's son, Pas said, should adhere strictly to the law, steering clear of political motivations.

Pas vice president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said the party is against selective prosecution, urging the government to refrain from using legal avenues to pressure political adversaries.

"The MACC's action against Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's eldest son has shocked us, but we understand the commission has its duty as stated in the law.

"Our simple wish is that the recent actions taken by MACC are rooted in legality rather than political directives. Otherwise, it will not be good for the institution and the country," the Kelantan State Assembly speaker told reporters when met at Medan Ilmu today.

Mohd Amar said the case surprised Pas as Tun Mahathir's son was not new in business and had been involved in it for a long time.

"All this time, no action was taken on him, but suddenly, this happened when there were political conflicts involving certain leaders.

"This is not good for the country's image, especially among the international community."

Expressing concern, the Panchor assemblyman suggests that the current government's pursuit of political adversaries seems akin to seeking revenge.

Such actions, he said, could negatively impact the nation and potentially tarnish its image, adding that the party believed more people would be hunted down.

The MACC has confirmed summoning former prime minister Dr Mahathir's eldest son to facilitate an ongoing investigation into his wealth.

In a statement yesterday, the commission said it served businessman Mirzan Mahathir a notice to declare all his assets, movable and immovable, whether inside or outside the country, within 30 days.
