Appointment of new Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri is the King's prerogative, says Abang Jo

KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg has declined to be dragged into the poser over the rumoured appointment of a new Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri.

He said the matter is the prerogative of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

"There's no need for me to comment as that is the sovereign right of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong," he said when asked by reporters after officiating the Eden Damai Wellness at Damai Lagoon Resort in Santubong, here today.

He was asked to comment on reports that Wan Junaidi has resigned as the Dewan Negara president and was set to become the eighth Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri.

Abang Johari also declined to comment when asked if Wan Junaidi had resigned as the Dewan Negara president.

"You'll have to ask him. I'm sorry, I can't say any more than that," he said.

Media reports yesterday claimed that Wan Junaidi had resigned as Dewan Negara president to prepare for his appointment as the next Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri.

Reports claimed that he is set to replace Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud as the eighth Sarawak governor.

Wan Junaidi, in June last year, came out of retirement to helm the Dewan Negara Speaker post. He replaced Tan Sri Rais Yatim, whose tenure ended on June 16 last year.

Wan Junaidi has so far remained mum on the speculation. It is understood that he is expected to issue a statement on the matter soon.
