Dr Mahathir faces police inquiry over alleged racist remarks

KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is set to have his statement recorded by the police tomorrow following controversial remarks concerning the loyalty of Indians and Chinese communities to the country.

The recording of the statement will take place at 11am at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya.

Dr Mahathir's lawyer, Rafique Rashid Ali, confirmed the matter.

"Yes, it's true at 11am tomorrow," he said to the New Straits Times.

During an interview with a Chennai-based Indian satellite television channel Thanthi TV, Dr Mahathir said Malaysian Indians and Chinese were not completely loyal to the country as they still want to identify themselves with their respective countries of origin.

Dr Mahathir who had twice served as the country's prime minister, also stood by his previous remarks that Malaysia belongs to the people who founded the country.

His statement has received criticisms from several quarters. Several police reports have also been lodged against the former Langkawi MP over his comments.
