No Malaysians affected in Xinjiang earthquake - Wisma Putra

KUALA LUMPUR: No Malaysians were reported to be involved or affected in the powerful earthquake that struck the Xinjiang region which killed at least three people on Tuesday, Wisma Putra said.

The Foreign Ministry, in a statement today, said it was closely monitoring developments in the aftermath of the earthquake which rattled northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

"Malaysia extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to the victims and families affected by the earthquake, as well as to the people and Government of the People's Republic of China," read the statement.

The ministry also advised Malaysians in the affected areas to remain vigilant and follow the latest updates and advice issued by the local authorities.

Reuters reported that a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the Kyrgyzstan-Xinjiang border region on Tuesday, leading to the collapse of homes as well as killing at least three people and injuring five.

Quoting Chinese state media, the report said the earthquake was felt strongly in Urumqi, Korla, Kashgar, Yining and surrounding areas.
