Stopping pensions: An end to grand aspirations of politicians for personal gain?

JELEBU: The termination of pensions for Ministers, Members of Parliament, and State Assembly members can put an end to the grand aspirations of politicians for personal gain.

Political activist Yuslaini Azmi said the government should not only target civil servants as politicians are increasingly obsessed with seizing power for personal gain.

He said that the termination of pensions for elected representatives is also a motivation because, after that, those who want to enter politics will realise they only have temporary power.

"When there is no advantage for them, even if it's just a short service, they certainly will not be obsessed with politics, and certainly various episodes of political greed, especially power struggles, will not continue.

"Therefore, we want to abolish the pensions for Ministers, Members of Parliament, and Adun first, followed by civil servants.

"Pakatan Harapan (PH) previously advocated for the abolition of pensions for elected representatives, and to demonstrate leadership by example, the pensions of that group should be terminated first," he said in a statement.

Yuslaini said that politicians ultimately do not serve for more than 30 years compared to civil servants who sacrifice a significant part of their lives in service to the country.

Yuslaini also believes that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim understands the aspirations of the people, and if he does not end the greed of politicians today, the situation will lead to a continued power struggle in the future.

He said this is due to the greed of politicians who only have personal benefits rather than serving the people.

"If after the abolition of pensions for Ministers and elected representatives, it still causes the national debt to remain high, then the abolition of pensions for civil servants can be considered.

"Let the leaders start, not those in the lower positions" he said.
