Indian high commission celebrates 75th Republic Day with pomp, festivities

KUALA LUMPUR: The Indian high commission celebrated the nation's 75th Republic Day at India House on Jan 26, with the unfurling of the flag and cultural performances.

The festivities, with about 400 people in attendance, started with high commissioner B.N. Reddy unfurling the Indian tricolour, followed by the singing of the national anthem.

Reddy highlighted the significance of 2023 as the inaugural year of 'Amritkaal,' where India achieved remarkable milestones, including becoming the fifth largest global economy, Chandrayaan-3's lunar exploration, hosting the G20 Summit, and the inauguration of India's new Parliament.

Emphasising the pursuit of 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047, he acknowledged the collective efforts that had lifted 248 million Indians out of poverty in the past nine years.

He expressed gratitude to the Indian community for their contributions to the growth of India.

The cultural segment of the celebrations showcased the talents of students from Indian schools in Kuala Lumpur, including performances by Global Indian International School Kuala Lumpur, Sprout Academy, and Vikas International School.

Indian associations also performed, with the Maharastra Mandal Malaysia presenting Marathi songs, and the Bharat Club Malaysia concluding the cultural event by singing patriotic songs.

The high commission organised a prize-giving ceremony for winners of the Hindi poetry and handwriting competitions held earlier in partnership with Indian schools in Malaysia, commemorating Vishwa Hindi Diwas.

A photo exhibition titled "New India: Driving India into Amritkaal" highlighted the advancements and achievements of India in 2023.

The exhibition captured milestones, events and success stories that defined the first year of India's 'Amritkaal'.

Reddy expressed optimism about bilateral relations between India and Malaysia for this year, as 2023 had seen further strengthening, making 2024 appear even more promising.

The celebrations were a testament to India's achievements, cultural vibrancy and the strong bond shared with the Indian community in Malaysia, he added.
