Anti-crime watchdog: Police force needs to have more emphasis on integrity

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Corruption Watch (MCW) wants the police force to give more emphasis on inculcating integrity within its ranks and to consider an increase in salaries and wages among the men in blue to combat corruption.

MCW president Jais Abdul Karim said this was vital to ensure what was caught on camera involving a British couple and a policeman allegedly asking for a bribe does not recur.

He said the viral video of a policeman taking RM100 from a foreign couple has truly tarnished the reputation of the men in blue.

"The lack of integrity among some policemen, financial pressures, and socio-economic conditions are a factor for their actions, but the force should tackle this through creating awareness, by enhancing internal oversight, including the use of body cameras, and implementing transparent procedures for reporting and investigating corruption and abuse of power complaints," he said.

Jais said there was a high correlation between corruption and the cost of living, indicating that corruption problems are often closely linked to financial pressures and economic imbalances in society.

"An increase in salaries and wages sufficient to meet the basic needs of the community is a crucial step in reducing dependence on corruption.

"When individuals and families face significant financial pressure, they may be forced to make difficult choices, including accepting bribes or going into debt to meet basic needs. Improving the work environment and addressing the basic needs of policemen are important steps in enhancing efficiency and integrity in police service.

"MCW believes studies by relevant agencies can provide a clearer understanding of patterns and causes of corruption in society," he said, adding that it would also be easier for policymakers and stakeholders to take appropriate measures to prevent and effectively combat corruption.

Jais added that salary increases will help alleviate the financial pressures experienced by policemen and their families, reducing the need to seek additional income that may pose corruption risks.

Additionally, providing adequate tools and equipment will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of police officers in carrying out their duties.

"Commitment to salary increases and equipping police offices is essential to ensure that police officers can provide the best service to the public while maintaining integrity and professionalism in their duties. This is a necessary step for authorities to improve the system and demonstrate a steadfast commitment to justice and integrity in public service."

Jais added that understanding the root problems and providing holistic solutions is crucial in efforts to combat corruption and foster integrity in society.

By continuing to exchange ideas and constructive criticism, MCW can also play a vital role in driving positive change in the socio-economic and legal systems.
