Fostering a savings culture

PETALING JAYA: The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) launched its "Cabutan WOW! Simpan SSPN 2024" annual campaign for this year, offering more substantial prizes to the winners.

PTPTN, under the Higher Education Ministry, has fostered savings habits through the National Education Savings Scheme (Simpan SSPN) since 2004, aiming to enhance financial literacy and cultivate a savings culture among Malaysians.

This campaign also serves as PTPTN's appreciation to Simpan SSPN depositors for choosing Simpan SSPN as their primary option for children's education savings.

PTPTN chairman Datuk Norliza Abdul Rahim said Cabutan WOW! offers prizes worth more than RM1.3 million to 983 participants.

The promotional period runs from Jan 1 to Dec 31.

She said this year's draw consists of an Annual Draw and five Series Draws held with themes, including celebrations and National Day festivities.

"To participate in this campaign, depositors only need to open an account or make additional deposits during the campaign period.

"Every net deposit of RM50 for Simpan SSPN Prime will garner one entry into the draw, while for every net deposit of RM50 for Simpan SSPN Plus, depositors will qualify for two automatic entries.

"This campaign also offers advantages to users of the myPTPTN application, who will receive multiple entries.

"Depositors of Simpan SSPN Prime making a net deposit of RM50 through myPTPTN, via salary deduction, or direct debit will receive five entries."

She also said depositors of Simpan SSPN Plus who make a net deposit of RM50 through myPTPTN, salary deduction, or direct debit would receive 10 entries.

There will be three categories — Silver, Gold, and Platinum — for the Annual Draw, each offering distinct prizes: a Proton S70 Flagship X car, Proton X50 Flagship car, and Proton X90 Flagship car, respectively.

Additionally, second-prize winners in each category will receive motorcycles: a Yamaha NVX 155cc, a Yamaha XMAX 250cc, and a Yamaha MT09, respectively.

Third-place winners will receive a cash prize of RM10,000, RM20,000, and RM30,000, respectively.

For the Series Draw Category, the main prize is RM10,000 in cash for one winner per series, and a cash prize of RM500 awaits 180 consolation prize winners per series.

PTPTN also celebrated the winners of the Cabutan WOW! Simpan SSPN 2023 in the Annual Draw category, which concluded on Dec 31 last year.

The grand prize winner received a cash prize of RM150,000, the second-place winner received RM50,000, and the third-place winner received RM10,000.

First-prize winner Mohd Azamuddin Ariffin, 41, said there were many benefits from saving through Simpan SSPN, including tax relief and Shariah compliance.

"I have three children, and I believe that the Simpan SSPN product can help with savings and financing for my children's future.

"I feel that in today's age, it's not difficult to save because we have online platforms and mobile applications besides physical counters.

"People, especially parents, should take advantage of this opportunity to save through methods recommended by PTPTN itself."

Mashalina Halim, 33, who won second prize, expressed gratitude and shared her approach to education savings.

"Every time a child is born, I open an education fund for them because we know Simpan SSPN is for our children's education, and we don't know our future circumstances as parents.

"So far, I have not encountered any difficulty because I use auto-debit monthly.

"Accessibility is abundant nowadays, there's no need to go to the bank like in the past."

Third-prize winner Ee Hock Yin, 48, said he would continue saving in Simpan SSPN, aiming to deposit RM8,000 to RM10,000 annually.

"I save in Simpan SSPN Prime for its numerous benefits and assurances for my children's future. My child aspires to become a teacher, so with this money, they can pursue higher education at the university."

PTPTN also announced prizes awarded to the grand winner of the "Cabutan Bulan Menabung Simpan SSPN 2023" campaign, consisting of RM10,000 in cash, and two consolation prize winners each received RM1,000.

Grand-prize winner Zati Hulwani Raza, 40, said she chose to open Simpan SSPN accounts for her children's education.

Norliza said she hoped this campaign would receive an encouraging response.

"Simpan SSPN is close to the hearts of Malaysians and remains the top choice as an education fund that can realise parents' dreams of seeing their children reach the pinnacle of success.

"The more you save, the greater your chances of winning."
