Northeast Monsoon triggers flash floods in multiple Johor districts.

JOHOR BARU: Continuous rain due to the Northeast Monsoon season caused flash flood in several districts in the state, today.

In Kampung Sentosa Damai, in Pasir Gudang, 26 victims were evacuated to the Dewan Muafakat Kampung Cahaya Baru relief centre after the housing estate were inundated in knee-high water.

The heavy and continuous downpour since the wee hours of the morning today, caused river levels to raise and overflow its banks.

Despite light drizzle later in the evening, yet the impact on the affected areas prompted immediate evacuation measures.

In Johor Jaya, the Fire and Rescue Department mobilised their 13-team flood patrol, to manage the crisis.

Several areas namely Simpang Ladang Mados, Kampung Dagang and Lorong Mak Piah reached critical levels, and the authorities are on standby to evacuate the victims to the Dewan Sungai Tiram, if required.

While in Kahang, Kluang, boat units were mobilised to monitor flood situations in the district.

About 10 housing estates in Kampung Contoh, Batu 22, and the vicinity of Kahang were hit by floods.

Roads within the villages, are accessible only by heavy vehicles, while some roads are totally closed.

Flash flood victims were evacuated to the Kluang Municipal Council (MPK) hall in Kahang.

Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and cautious. They are advised to adhere to evacuation instructions, and to keep a close-eye on their children, senior citizens and those with disabilities.

They are also warned against playing in flood-prone areas.

Earlier, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi advised Johoreans to practice extra caution amid the Meteorology Department forecast of continuous heavy downpour until Jan 7.
