'Kepung Demi Palestin' rally: Cops to record statements tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: Fifteen individuals involved in the 'Aksi Bertindak: Kepung Demi Palestin' rally, held near the United States Embassy in Jalan Tun Razak last week, will be summoned by the police to assist in the investigation.

In a statement today, the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) said they have been called to provide statements at the Wangsa Maju district police headquarters at 10am tomorrow (Friday).

Among those summoned are MCA Youth deputy chief Mike Chong Yew Chuan; Muda secretary-general, Amir Hariri Abd Hadi; and former Batu member of parliament, Tian Chua, who is also associated with the Palestinian Solidarity Secretariat.

Others called for questioning include Parti Amanah Negara Youth chief, Senator Hasbie Muda, and his deputy Danial Al-Rashid Haron Aminar Rashid; Pertubuhan Kebajikan Rakyat Sejagat Malaysia president, Syed Sheikh Al-Attas Syed Hassan; lawyer Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan; and social activist, Hishamuddin Rais.

Police on Jan 1 said they were in the process of obtaining statements from the organisers of the six-day rally to aid the probe under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

City police chief Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid said once the statements have been recorded, the investigation papers will be handed over to the deputy public prosecutor's office for further action.

The 'Aksi Bertindak: Kepung Demi Palestin' involved 48 non-governmental organisations (NGOs), comprising community organisations, youth and student associations, as well as political groups from various spectrums.

Some of the NGOs included the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (Mapim), Viva Palestina Malaysia, Al-Quds Malaysia Foundation, Suara Rakyat Malaysia and Malaysian Women's Coalition for Al-Quds and Palestine.

The gathering near the US embassy, in which participants aimed to 'surround' the premises, was symbolic of the blockade on Gaza, and was to demand an end to the killings of Palestinians as well as an immediate ceasefire.
