KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry (MoE) has affirmed its commitment to address the issue of bullying in schools.
In response to an alleged assault by a student on a schoolmate, the ministry assured that disciplinary action would be taken against the perpetrator.
Emphasising its unwavering stance against bullying, the MoE is dedicated to fostering a safe and respectful environment within all educational institutions under its jurisdiction.
"MoE views seriously the case of bullying that has gone viral on social media today. This case is under scrutiny, and investigations are being conducted to ensure swift resolution.
"The school authorities have also been instructed to ensure disciplinary action is taken against the guilty students, and the related misconduct is duly recorded," it said in a statement.
The ministry has taken initial steps to address this case based on the Special Circular (SPI) Number 12 of 2023: Implementation of Guidelines for Managing Bullying in Educational Institutions under the MoE.
"This includes contacting parents/guardians, conducting thorough and detailed investigations, notifying the School Liaison Officer (PPS) of the police force, and providing counselling services to all involved students."
MoE also urged the public to adhere to existing laws by not disclosing the identities of children involved in bullying.
"The Child Act 2001 [Act 611] stipulates that children's identities in criminal cases should not be disclosed and must be protected.
"The cooperation of the entire community is also requested not to normalise bullying behaviour."
Earlier, it was reported that the police had detained a 15-year-old student for allegedly assaulting his schoolmate.
The incident is believed to have been triggered by the victim's refusal to skip school, leading the assailant to forcefully strike the victim's face and chest using a helmet.
Sentul police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari confirmed that a report on the incident was received from the victim's father yesterday.
