Anifah calls on Asean to address human rights breaches, particularly in Gaza

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Foreign Minister Senator Tan Sri Anifah Aman has called for the Asean nations not to remain oblivious to any breaches of United Nations (UN) protocols, especially on human rights to life, freedom and security.

In his speech during the Regional Outlook Forum organised by The Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) -Yusof Ishak Institute, Anifah said despite Asean being non-aligned, it should take a stance, especially regarding the atrocities in Gaza.

"In light of global events such as the US-China problem, the Ukraine-Russia conflict and the atrocities in Gaza, I pose a question to us all.

"How long shall we sit and watch, and how many more have to be slaughtered before the atrocities end?

"To demonstrate Asean neutrality while maintaining itself as a responsible regional body, it should not remain oblivious to any breaches of UN protocols."

He said Asean's neutrality should not be seen as condoning outright disrespect for human life and therefore calls for it to take a stance, especially regarding the atrocities in Gaza.

"It should also take actions like what South Africa did by bringing Israel to the International Court of Justice for its genocidal actions.

"When taking a stand, Asean will then begin to play an active role in the resolution of global conflicts and it should do this independently of the US-China rivalry." he said.

Anifah said it could do so by engaging with other international bodies directly such as the European Union, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, or the African Union and act as pressure groups to the UN.

He also added that Asean member states could also call for a reform of the UN especially after the US vetoed a ceasefire in the UN Security Council which differed from the consensus reached in the UN General Assembly.

"During my tenure as foreign minister, we have called for a reform of the United Nations. Is one veto all it takes to make the UN helpless in resolving global conflicts?

"Asean member states should make calls for reform of the UN so that the supremacy of the UN General Assembly is maintained."

He said although Asean's accomplishments in elevating regional prosperity and fostering global dialogue are commendable, the complacency and pure neutrality to the point of ignorance is a luxury it cannot afford.

"The imperative for Asean's unity, advocacy, and strategic foresight has never been more pronounced.

"In this intricate geopolitical landscape, Asean's future hinges on collective resilience, strategic vision, and unwavering commitment to upholding principles of human rights," he said.

Currently, the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has entered day 95, has claimed more than 23,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians and injured more than 59,000 others.

At least 185 Israeli soldiers have also died with more than 1,000 others have been wounded in the fighting.
