SESB moving out of iconic KK landmark

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) headquarters in Wisma SESB will be relocated to a new building after almost five decades being in the same place.

Built in 1976 with architecture reflecting the technological progress of that era, the building is a prominent landmark in the state capital.

Throughout its time occupying the building, SESB has overseen the evolution of the electricity supply industry in Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan.

"The 10-storey building includes a penthouse on the 10th floor, which was once the office for state political figures. It is now the chairman's office.

"Wisma SESB shares its historical significance with other older buildings in Kota Kinabalu, such as Wisma Majlis Ugama Islam Sabah (MUIS), Wisma Dang Bandang, Wisma Merdeka, the Post Office Building, KUWASA Building, Tun Fuad Building, and the Federal Office Building," said a statement.

It said Wisma SESB continues to stand tall as a state landmark in its 48 years of existence. It said it was time for SESB to relocate to a new office for the overall safety of employees and the public.

It said that its hall witnessed thousands of couples celebrating their wedding receptions.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson said as Wisma SESB ages, it faces several issues with its structure.

The spokesperson said the use of sea sand in its early construction led to cracks and structural weaknesses in certain parts of the building.

Sabah's tropical environment exposes the building to humidity and intense sunlight, contributing to the growth of mold, paint damage and surface issues.

There were various efforts to address the 'ageing' of Wisma SESB, including plans for modern and conducive internal restructuring which will allow it to remain an innovation centre in the electric industry.

"Collaboration with local technology experts and innovative solutions, such as optimising space usage, is part of the effort to preserve the building.

"However, any comprehensive structural restoration effort have faced some challenges because of the building's age."

The lack of space to accommodate modern and quality facilities is also a constraint to any attempt to renovate the building.
