Timeline of Spanco's case

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today said it will summon individuals involved in the decisions to award contracts for the supply and management of government vehicles to Spanco Sdn Bhd (Spanco).

Below is the timeline of the Spanco case:

1993: Spanco Sdn Bhd is awarded the contract to manage the government's vehicle fleet.

2018: Spanco's agreement with the government expires in December of this year.

2019: The government opens tenders to companies for the concession to supply and manage the government's fleet of vehicles for the next 15 years. In the same year, Berjaya Group and Naza form a consortium to jointly bid for the lucrative contract.

2020: MoF announces it has chosen a new concessionaire to manage its fleet of vehicles, but does not name it.

July 2023:Berjaya Group founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan files a lawsuit against the government and Spanco regarding the terminated Letter of Intent (LoI) and claimed that the contract had been awarded to Spanco instead despite their higher bid.

He also said the consortium had received the LoI from the ministry to replace Spanco, but the contract was terminated unfairly before the accrual award was set to be announced.

Jan 19, 2024: MACC conducts a raid on the residence of a businessman with the title of 'Tan Sri' for an investigation into allegations of corruption involving the procurement and management of the government's fleet of vehicles worth RM4.5 billion. MACC also raided four companies including a government vehicle supplier.

Feb 5, 2024: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government's agreement with Spanco was detrimental to the country. Anwar also said he had been vigilant about the issue during his tenure as the finance minister under the administration of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Feb 6, 2024: MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki announced that individuals involved in the decisions to award contracts for the supply and management of government vehicles to Spanco will be summoned to assist in the investigation.
