Eleven security guards arrested for SOP breach on firearm handling

SHAH ALAM: Police have arrested 11 men, working as security guards under one company, for breaching the standard operating procedure (SOP) on carrying firearms.

Commenting on the raid that was conducted in Sabak Bernam and Kuala Selangor, Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the company is a repeated offender as it has previously breached the same offences under firearms licensing laws.

"The same company has committed five offences repeatedly since 2015.

"After we completed the investigation, we will deliberate on whether there is a need to revoke their firearm license," he told the media during a press conference at the Selangor Police Headquarters, here today.

When asked why action was not taken earlier against the company, Hussein said that the police had previously taken necessary measures as harsh punishment would have affected their operations.

"The police had previously issued warnings and advised the company to comply with the laws," he added.

He said one of the offences is failure to provide a proper storage facility for the firearm.

He also said that the company also did not provide the necessary logistics procedures for security personnel that carry firearms on a daily basis.

"Initial investigation results indicate that the suspect transported a firearm back to his residence unsafely using a motorcycle, such as carrying the firearm without safety precautions.

"When questioned further, the suspect said that he was directed by the company to store the firearm at home after approximately two years of registration. This has been ongoing for about two years due to the company being licensed in Kuala Lumpur," he said.

All men were remanded for two days and bailed by the police."
