88 Captains spearhead 'AI for School' initiative to boost Penang talent development

GEORGE TOWN: Persatuan Kebajikan 88 Kapten Pulau Pinang, also known as the 88 Captains, is preparing to launch a groundbreaking initiative called 'AI for School (AI4S)' to further cultivate young talent in Penang.

This new venture builds upon the success of their existing 'Penang 5G School Digital Library' initiative, setting a new benchmark in educational innovation, Buletin Mutiara reported.

88 Captains chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ooi Eng Hock had on Feb 12 emphasised the transformative impact of AI in education.

"Artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionise teaching. Through the use of AI-powered tools and strategies, educators can personalise learning, improve students' outcomes, and ensure success in the digital age," Ooi was quoted as saying by Buletin Mutiara.

The 'Penang 5G School Digital Library' programme, initiated on May 23, 2023, has already been implemented in 72 schools, with a target to reach 88 schools by March.

The association's commitment to education extends beyond these numbers, responding to Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh's call to broaden the programme's reach.

"We will also support the construction of new schools in Penang, namely SJKC Kwang Aik and SJKT Ladang Juru, as well as the building of ViTrox College," Ooi added, detailing the association's plans for educational infrastructure development.

In a show of support, 16 donors contributed RM150,000 each to the 88 Captains Education Fund (2024-2025), amassing a total of RM2.4 million.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow lauded the 88 Captains for the significant strides made since its inception on April 7, 2022.

He recalled the association's scholarship distribution ceremony last November, which disbursed RM500,000 to students from various local universities.

Chow also extended gratitude to sponsors and partners for providing the necessary funding, equipment and expertise for the digital library program.

"The state government, through our related agencies, the Penang Digital Library and Penang Science Cluster, fully supports this programme," he said.

In a gesture reflecting the association's commitment to community welfare, a mock cheque of RM100,000 was presented to Yayasan Amal TYT Pulau Pinang, received by its executive officer Suhaimi Chee.
