[UPDATED] Aircraft in Kapar crash was airworthy, says Transport Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: The Gabriel BK160TR aircraft (registration I-POOC) has valid airworthiness certification under the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) when it crashed on Tuesday (Feb 13).

The Transport Ministry said, in a statement today, the investigation into the crash would continue to determine the circumstances and causes of the accident to save lives and prevent similar accidents in the future.

"In accordance with Annex 13 of the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation), an initial report will be prepared within 30 days of the accident followed by a full report no later than 12 months after the incident," it added.

The light aircraft crashed in Kampung Tok Muda, Kapar killing two people onboard- pilot Daniel Yee Hsiang Khoon, 30, and co-pilot Roshaan Singh Raina, 42.

The two victims were found around 2pm inside the aircraft cockpit, which was buried more than two meters in the ground.

It was reported possible structural failure could have been the cause of the Gabriel BK-160TR aircraft crashed in Kapar, Klang.

Universiti Kuala Lumpur's Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology head of aviation search and rescue department, Associate Professor Major Dr Mohd Harridon Mohamed Suffian was reported saying this based upon eyewitness accounts, the wing had disintegrated from the fuselage of the aircraft.

Harridon said the wing disintegration had raised question on the structural integrity of the aircraft, as it has the ingrained capability to withstand high values of G-forces within the range of positive 4G and negative 2G.

The Transport Ministry also said based on initial investigations, the aircraft bearing registration mark I-POOC belongs to Blackshape S.p.A, an Italian company.

"Sky Media Ltd, a Hong Kong company, acts as the distributor of the aircraft for Blackshape S.p.A in the Southeast Asian region.

"Sky Media Ltd has appointed Aviation Safety Technology Pte Ltd (AST), a Singapore company, for marketing services for the Gabriel BK160TR aircraft.

"AST has appointed the pilot involved in the accident to operate the Gabriel BK160TR aircraft (registration IPOOC) for promotional purposes to customers in Malaysia," it said.
