Jawi, MAIWP to provide incentives to mosques, surau excelling in toilet management

PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) and the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) will grant RM120,000 in incentives to six mosques and surau that excel in toilet management.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the incentive will be awarded after consistent six-month assessments.

"This cleanliness campaign is part of Jawi's programmes aimed at attracting more worshippers to the mosque to join the congregation.

"We are initiating this with the hope that mosques and surau under JAWI's administration will serve as examples to others," he said after the launch of the Five-Star Restroom Cleanliness Campaign for Mosques and Surau in the Federal Territories today (Feb 16).

Mohd Na'im said when determining the top toilet facilities, evaluations encompass not only cleanliness and fragrance but also the quality of infrastructure within the respective restroom areas.

He said he had encountered toilet facilities at mosques and surau that were in less than ideal conditions, adding that at one surau, four toilets were unusable due to doors that couldn't close properly, leaving only one functional toilet available.

He said the cleanliness campaign, coinciding with Jawi's Golden Jubilee celebrations, aims to preserve the sanctity of mosques and surau.

"My hope is for all mosque committee members and congregants under JAWI to cooperate to ensure that their toilet facilities meet a five-star standard.

"It is important to upkeep mosques and surau to offer comfort to congregants and visitors," he added. — Bernama
