Final decision on Malaysia Madani white rice tomorrow, says cost of living committee chief

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Faisal wants speculation on the Malaysia Madani white rice programme to end.

The chairman of the National Action Council for Cost of Living (NACCOL) food cluster task force said a final decision on the matter would be reached tomorrow, with an announcement expected thereafter.

"Let's just wait for our final say after the (NACCOL) meeting tomorrow. I will comment further later, but enough for now," he briefly told the 'New Straits Times'.

The remarks came on the heels of Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu's statement on the Malaysia Madani white rice, which contradicts Syed Abu Hussin's earlier statement.

Mohamad said the government has not made any decision to introduce a single category of white rice.

"At this point, no decision has been made on Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Faisal's proposal."

Earlier this week, Syed Abu Hussin, who is also the member of parliament for Bukit Gantang, said the government would introduce the Malaysia Madani white rice from March 1. It would be priced at RM30 for a 10kg sack.

He said this meant there would no longer be local white rice and imported white rice categories.
