Pas supports initiative by special committee: Takiyuddin

KUALA LUMPUR: Pas fully supports the efforts of the Special Committee Studying Issues Related to the Competence of the State Legislative Assemblies to Enact Islamic Laws.

In a statement tonight, Pas secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the party is confident of the efforts undertaken by the special committee, including to review and propose amendments to the Federal Constitution and Federal law, if necessary.

"This initiative seeks to address challenges faced by Syariah law, ensuring clarity and authority for state legislatures to enact Syariah law without ambiguity."

He said the polemic arising from recent court decisions challenging and even nullifying Syariah laws of certain states, has raised concerns about potential future cancellations and its present position in the country.

"As a society that regards Syariah law not only as a responsibility but also a religious right, Pas believes all actions to uphold Syariah law must be taken regardless of political affiliations," Takiyuddin said.

"Pas welcomes the announcement by the Minister of the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) regarding the government's intention to introduce a bill to amend the Syariah Courts Act (Criminal Jurisdiction) 1965 (RUU355) in Parliament this year," he said.

Earlier today, it was reported that the last engagement sessions on the proposed amendment to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 are being done before the feedback is compiled and presented to the cabinet.
