'Code of ethics will act as compass for media practitioners'

JAKARTA: The Malaysian Code of Ethics for Journalists will act as a compass for Malaysian media, said Ikatan Setiakawan Wartawan Malaysia-Indonesia president Ashwad Ismail.

The Astro Awani editor-in-chief also said the announcement of the code of ethics was an important point in the country's media scene.

"The code of ethics is a very important document which will act as a compass for journalists or media practitioners.

"At the same time, we see this (announcement) as a vital point, and it is a 'refresher' for all journalists.

"The code of ethics is not something new globally, and it is a living document as the media is linked closely to technological development," he said when met here today.

The Malaysian Code of Ethics for Journalists, developed by the Communications Ministry through the Malaysian Information Department, was launched today by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

The document is a guideline for media agencies to carry out their duties, thus promoting professionalism and integrity of the media as a source of news and information trusted by the people.

It outlines eight fundamental ethics that underscore the responsibilities and standards expected of journalists.
