Malaysia, Canada to enhance agriculture and food security cooperation

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Canada have expressed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the agriculture, fisheries and livestock sectors, in addition to welcoming technical cooperation in agricultural research and development.

This was among the essence of the discussion between Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup and Canada's Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Lawrence MacAulay, which took place today.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in a statement today, said the meeting also discussed aspects of bilateral cooperation in the field of food security.

During the meeting, Arthur introduced MacAulay to Malaysian agricultural products such as pineapples, while also expressing his interest in exporting local tropical fruits to the Canadian market.

"He also extended his congratulations to Canada for assuming the chair of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) for 2024," said KPKM.

Earlier, Arthur received a courtesy call from MacAulay at Wisma Tani, Putrajaya. Also present were KPKM deputy secretary-general (Policy) Datuk Azah Hanim Ahmad, Department of Veterinary Services director-general Dr Akma Ngah Hamid, and ministry officials.
