70km journey to Sabah school turns into 8-hour drive for MCMC

KOTA MARUDU: A Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) entourage sent to install telecommunication devices in a school just 70 kilometres from town took eight hours to reach their destination.

It was a nightmarish journey as the entourage, which used four-wheel-drive vehicles, had to contend with rough and muddy roads.

"The journey (on Tuesday) was not as easy as expected. Almost all of our vehicles got stuck several times in the mud," MCMC said in a statement.

"Some vehicles lost control and overturned while passing through damaged roads and streams."

After the eight-hour drive, the group, which also included Sabah NEt and Kota Marudu District Education Office personnel installed the devices in SK Magandai.

The initiative is part of the Sabah Maju Jaya initiative by Sabah Science, Technology, and Innovation Ministry.

Meanwhile, a villager who declined to be named said the road to the school is under construction though bad weather has delayed its completion.

Kampung Magandai, where the school is located, previously made headlines after it was reported that villagers had to climb an eight-kilometre trail up a hill to access the internet.
