CNY billboard featuring Penang CM Chow vandalised

GEORGE TOWN: Several Chinese New Year (CNY) billboards and banners in Pulau Tikus here, featuring state leaders, have been vandalised.

The billboards featured Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, Bukit Bendera member of parliament Syerleena Abdul Rashid and Pulau Tikus assemblyman Joshua Woo.

However, only Chow's picture was sprayed with black paint, some with an 'X' sign while others with the word 'Scam'.

Bukit Bendera DAP Youth lodged a police report over the vandalism at the Pulau Tikus police station this morning.

They claimed they came across the vandalised billboards yesterday at Jalan Burma, Jalan Kelawai and Lebuhraya Maktab.

"Such action can be construed as an attempt at incitement to paint a bad picture of the leader's image and to create disharmony among the people.

"There have been a few instances where the photos of state leaders have been vandalised, especially in the Pulau Tikus area," they said after lodging the report.

The Bukit Bendera DAP Youth feared it might be the work of the same individual/group of people.

"The frequency of these extreme actions also seems to challenge the authority and the ability of the authorities to take strict action on the individuals or group of people.

"We urged the police to investigate and take appropriate actions against those responsible.

"We hope such an incident will not recur in future," they added.
