Kelantan's detention centre for undocumented migrants under control

TANAH MERAH: The only Immigration detention centre for undocumented migrants in Kelantan is under control with no incidents reported.

State Immigration director Mohd Faizal Shamsuddin said a total of 570 foreigners are currently being held at the centre.

He said the figure was recorded as of Feb 22 and majority of the migrants were Rohingya.

"Our detention centre here is under strict control and continuous efforts as well as a 24 hours surveillance have been taken to maintain stringent security at the centre.

"All officers manning the centre are told to monitor the place consistently following the escape incidents in Bidor, Perak.

"It currently houses 570 detainees and so far, no incidents have been reported," he said.

He added the centre has a capacity for up to 600 detainees.

On Feb 1, 131 undocumented migrants, comprising 115 Rohingya, 15 Myanmar nationals and one Bangladeshi, escaped from the men's block during a riot at the temporary detention depot in Bidor.

On another note, Mohd Faizal said the department would continue to carry out join operations with other enforcement agencies to nab undocumented migrants.

"The operation will be held at 'hotspot' areas that we have identified," he added.
