Dewan Rakyat observes a moment of silence in remembrance of Tun Taib Mahmud

KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat today recited Al-Fatihah and observed a minute of silence in remembrance of former Sarawak governor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud who died last week.

At the beginning of sitting today, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul also expressed his condolences to Taib's family.

"The late Taib had also served as the chief minister of Sarawak, Kota Samarahan member of parliament and held several federal administrative positions in the government.

"We pray that Allah showers his mercy upon the demise and may he be placed among the righteous," he said in the Lower House, today.

Taib died at the Cardiac Vascular Sentral Kuala Lumpur (CVSKL) on Feb 21. He was 87.

He served as Sarawak's chief minister from March 1981 to February 2014 before becoming the state's governor from March 1, 2014, until Jan 26, this year.

Before being appointed chief minister, he had also served at the federal level in various ministries.
