Shafee showing Najib's pardon application letter: Kepong MP's bid to question PM rejected

KUALA LUMPUR: A question by a DAP member of parliament on whether lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah breached the law by revealing information on Datuk Seri Najib Razak's pardon application was rejected by the Dewan Rakyat.

This was stated in a letter dated Feb 23 from Dewan Rakyat secretary Nizam Mydin Bacha Mydin to Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng sighted by media publications and outlets, including the New Straits Times.

Nizam, in the letter, said the question by Lim, who wanted to ask the prime minister in Parliament if Shafee had violated the law by revealing information on Najib's pardon application, was rejected on the grounds that the information sought was a secret.

Nizam said the request breached Standing Order 23(1)(f). He responded to Lim on behalf of Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

Shafee, on Feb 20, had said that the former prime minister's pardon application letter was not confidential.

"I showed only the seal. I never shared the contents (of the letter). This is because I didn't get permission from my client and not because it is confidential."
