Penang Street Food Festival to spice up Bangkok again in May

GEORGE TOWN: Penang is exporting its culinary delights to the heart of Thailand once again, with the Penang Street Food Festival scheduled for early May this year, following the event's success in Bangkok three years ago, Buletin Mutiara reported.

Malaysia's Ambassador to Thailand Datuk Jojie Samuel announced the eagerly anticipated return of the festival during a courtesy visit to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

The inaugural food festival, held in Bangkok in 2021, captivated the taste buds of attendees, showcasing the rich flavours of Penang's street food culture.

"After receiving an overwhelming response during the inaugural food festival in Bangkok in 2021, the Penang Street Food Festival 2.0 is expected to be held in early May. We hope to get support from the Penang government for the festival.

"The vendors who participated in the previous festival were the Malaysian diaspora in Thailand. This year, we would like to include chefs, vendors and cultural troupes directly from Penang," he said.

Jojie extended an invitation to Chief Minister Chow to attend the festival and highlighted ongoing collaboration efforts with Penang Global Tourism (PGT) and other tourism stakeholders to ensure the event's success.

"My office has been in contact with PGT to work together in organising the festival, and we will also be inviting all other tourism players to take part," he said.

In response, Chief Minister Chow expressed his support for the initiative, stating that PGT would closely look into the matter.
