Teen's aggressive outburst in Tangkak mosque prompts police intervention

TANGKAK: An 18-year-old believed to be mentally unsound allegedly created a ruckus inside the Masjid Jamek Bandar Tangkak, here, yesterday.

Footage of the boy screaming and sitting on the mosque's minbar (the pulpit where the imam usually stands while delivering the Friday prayer sermon), was posted on "We Love Tangkak", a private Facebook page.

Tangkak deputy police chief Deputy Superintendent Idris Abdul Rahman said police were called in at 10.30pm, after the mosque congregation members were unable to calm the teenager who was allegedly behaving aggressively.

"Police persuaded the teenager to cool off, and managed to escort him to the police station.

"Initial investigations revealed that he had been depressed and started talking to himself for the past three days, prior to the incident," Idris said.

Police summoned the teenager's parents, who live near the mosque, to the station.

He added that police released the teenager to his parents without taking any further action against him as he did not cause any damage to the mosque or injure anyone.

His parents sought medical treatment for him at the Tangkak Hospital.
