Govt told to 'walk the talk' over its Madani concept [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has been urged to align its actions with its Madani slogan, including adhering to the teachings of Islam in its administration.

This, according to Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, was due to the government's failure to uphold the Madani ideology taught by the Prophet.

He added that one prime example where injustice had occurred in the administration included the proposal for the abolishment of pensions for civil servants.

"The Prophet has set an example in establishing a state known as Madinah and the term Madani that we use is derived from this. However, it (the use of the term) does not adhere to the Prophet's teachings.

"One example was the suggestion to abolish pensions which is not in line with the Madani spirit as civil servants should be evaluated not only in terms of money but also based on their service, dedication to the country and the people," he said in his speech during the Royal Address debate in Dewan Rakyat, today.

In January, the government announced its plan to introduce a new civil service hiring policy including a "no-pension" scheme for new hires to tackle the ballooning allocation for its remuneration system.

This has prompted pushback from the public, with some quarters calling for the government to revoke pensions for politicians and political appointees first.

The Public Service Department (PSD), meanwhile, said the proposed improvements on the public service remuneration system were expected to be finalised and presented to the cabinet in the second quarter of the year.

Hadi, meanwhile, also likened the government's Madani concept to a mynah bird in response to a question from his fellow Pas member Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu), who asked whether Hadi agreed that the concept deviated from the teachings of the Prophet.

"Please include this in my speech. Not only a mynah but (the government) is also like a parrot. They only repeat (the slogan) but don't know the meaning of it."

At the same time, he also urged the government to be fair to all quarters regardless of whether they are from the opposition or the government.

This, he said, was because the opposition members of parliament (MPs) had yet to receive allocations from the government to serve their constituencies.

"They must be fair, including in fund allocations as taxes are collected from everyone. However, there are differences when it is distributed, (which is) unfair."
