13 Pantun Gates to enrich visitor experience in Melaka

AYER KEROH: The Melaka state government has unveiled an innovative cultural initiative with the installation of 13 Pantun Gates at key entry points across the state, Melaka Hari Ini reported.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf Yusoh said this initiative is aimed at preserving the traditional art of Malay pantun (poetry) for future generations, enriching the cultural experience of visitors and tourists arriving in Melaka.

The Pantun Gates are strategically located at major intersections and entryways into Melaka, serving as welcoming beacons that introduce the rich cultural heritage of the state through poetic verses.

"The location of the pantun is at the intersection of the entrance to Padang Keladi for the area of Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council.

"For the areas under the Alor Gajah Municipal Council, they are located at Simpang Ampat roundabout, Kuala Linggi Bridge, Lubok Cina roundabout, Tebong intersection, Kendong intersection, Kuala Ina intersection, and Pulau Sebang.

"Meanwhile, for the administrative areas of the Jasin Municipal Council, they are at Bandar Jasin Bestari, Jasin Toll, Umbai Town, Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin (AMJ) Highway Sungai Rambai, Asahan, and Simpang Bekoh," he said.

Ab Rauf's statement came in response to an inquiry during the second day of the First Session of the Third Term of the 15th Melaka State Legislative Assembly.

He emphasised the state's commitment to elevating and immortalising the pantun culture by making it an intrinsic part of Melaka's identity and appeal.

Additionally, to facilitate the preservation and promotion of this cultural treasure, the state government has launched the Melaka Pantun Gateway website.

This digital platform aims to bring Melaka's pantun heritage to a wider audience, allowing visitors to explore the poetic beauty and wisdom embedded in this traditional Malay literary form.
