Baby dies on first day at childcare centre

SHAH ALAM: A three-month-old baby boy was found unconscious on his first day at a childcare centre in Setia Alam here, on Monday.

Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said police received a report about the incident from the victim's father at 2.31pm on that day.

"An investigation revealed that the victim was sent by his father to the childcare centre at 8.30am.

"At 10.30am, the victim's father was informed by the childcare centre manager that the baby was unconscious.

"The victim was taken to the Emergency Department of Shah Alam Hospital and pronounced dead after resuscitation efforts failed," he said in a statement today.

Iqbal said a post-mortem was conducted from 12.30pm until 5pm at the forensic unit of the hospital yesterday.

"The results of the post-mortem are pending laboratory investigation. Examination of the victim found no external or internal injuries.

"An investigation is being carried out under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act," he said.

He added that statements from the caregivers and staff of the childcare centre had been taken.

"For the victim's parents, statements will be taken after the victim's burial in Kelantan."
