Foreign detainees in Pekan Nenas Immigration Depot fund own repatriation

PONTIAN: Foreign detainees at the Pekan Nenas Immigration Depot here took charge of their repatriation expenses back to their home countries today.

The 117 foreign detainees consisting of 85 Myanmar-nationals and 33 Indian nationals were deported via the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, after serving their respective sentences.

Previously held for various immigration violations at the Pekan Nenas Immigration Depot in Pontian, the detainees were escorted to KLIA by a senior immigration officer and 25 rank and file officers in two trucks, two vans, and a sport utility vehicle.

Funding their own repatriation expenses with assistance from their embassies, the detainees had completed sentences for offences under the Immigration Act 1969/63 and Immigration Regulations 1963, according to state Immigration director Baharuddin Tahis.

The depot's Records and Transfer Unit has conducted 41 repatriation exrcises of its detainees this year.
