Search op for missing fisherman off Pulau Pemanggil intensifies

MERSING: A fisherman, 32, fell off his boat while hauling in his fishing net about 3.3 nautical miles of northwest Pulau Pemanggil here yesterday.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's (MMEA) search and rescue mission, which went underway immediately after the 4.10pm incident, has yet to locate the victim.

The SAR mission is coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) in Johor Baru and has entered its second day today with the deployment of MMEA's personnel, supported by the Marine Police Force, Royal Malaysian Navy, Fisheries Department and Mersing Fishermen's Association.

State MMEA director First Admiral Maritime Nurul Hizam Zakaria said the victim, Mohamad Sufian Alwi, was onboard the boat with three other fishermen.

He was shirtless but was wearing a green short when he was retrieving the fishing net before he slipped and fell overboard due to rough sea conditions.

"We have divided our search radius into four sectors, covering an area of 74 square nautical miles."
