Mindef aware of parents' concerns over National Service modules [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: The Defence Ministry has taken note of parents' concerns on the reimplementation of the National Service Training Programme (NS3.0), said Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The Defence Minister said the module for the NS3.0 had yet to be finalised.

"We take note of parents' concerns, and we will tailor the module according to age. The NS3.0 may not involve those in schools," he said in a press conference today.

The NS3.0 training is expected to restart next year, and will have two training components – nation military-based training and nation building or patriotism components.

Mohamed Khaled said the military-based training would account for 80 per cent of the curriculum, with the remaining going towards nation building.

The New Straits Times, in a report last week, had interviewed parents with school-going children who qualified for the revamped training programme.

They told the NST that they had doubts on the take-home benefits of the new military syllabus proposed for the programme, and found that suggested composition was too harsh.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Khaled said the Defence Ministry would collaborate with the Education Ministry to formulate the nation building component of the training programme.

"There will be elements of unity, and community, among others," he added.

On Oct 8 last year, the then Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the programme would be making a comeback pending paperwork submission to the National Security Council (NSC) first before approval.

The programme, he said, could take place at the existing 13 army camps and one police camp during a 45-day period.
