Zaliha: No plan to nominate Kampung Baru as Unesco World Heritage Site

KUALA LUMPUR: The government does not intend to nominate Kampung Baru as a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said a Unesco recognition would hinder development of the area.

"Furthermore, the recognition comes in three tiers, starting with designation as a heritage site by the National Heritage Department, followed by recognition as a national heritage by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry and finally, as a Unesco World Heritage Site.

"Heritage recognition across these tiers involves a number of criteria, and some of these may not align with the present features of Kampung Baru."

She said the Kampung Baru Development Corporation (PKB) had prepared the Kampung Baru Development Masterplan 2040.

"The masterplan is the main framework and guide in the development of Kampung Baru (for the next 20 years).

"PKB will also ensure the rights and interests of the Malays in the area are preserved."
