PROKESA intensifies efforts to aid dwarf community in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: The Persatuan Orang Kerdil Sabah (PROKESA) has announced its commitment to ramp up efforts in supporting the dwarf community within the state, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Chairperson Asna Asnah Yusop outlined various planned initiatives aimed at improving the economic status and welfare of individuals with dwarfism, alongside fostering human capital development.

In a move to enhance economic opportunities, PROKESA is set to collaborate on programmes providing training and courses for the dwarf community, including in areas such as frozen food processing. These endeavours aim to bolster the local market presence and underline the capability of individuals with dwarfism to contribute significantly to Sabah's socio-economic landscape.

"We are dedicated to changing public perceptions, showcasing that people with dwarfism deserve the chance to engage in various fields. It's crucial for us to highlight their potential as contributors to the state's socio-economic progress," Asna explained.

The association is actively identifying locations inhabited by the dwarf community to offer encouragement and support, ensuring that talents within the community are recognised and not hidden due to stigma.

Moreover, Asna emphasised the need for more dwarf-friendly infrastructure within government and commercial buildings, advocating for better accessibility to accommodate the unique needs of the dwarf community.

During a courtesy visit to Sabah Governor Tun Juhar Mahiruddin at Istana Seri Kinabalu, Asna shared information about upcoming charity dinners, breaking of fast events, and other programmes scheduled for the year.

The visit also served as a platform for Maahad Tahfiz Sulaimaniyah, led by Chairman Datuk Osman Jamal, to inform Tun Juhar about sending 32 students to Turkey for further studies and plans to open more branches in Sabah. Starting in Tawau in 2014, Maahad Tahfiz Sulaimaniyah has expanded with branches in Kota Kinabalu and Papar.

Through these initiatives, PROKESA and its partners aim to build a more inclusive society in Sabah, where individuals with dwarfism are empowered to achieve their full potential and lead fulfilling lives.
