Sultan of Selangor presents Aidilfitri donations, receives zakat at UPM do

SERDANG: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah tonight presented Aidilfitri donations to orphans, Muslim converts, persons with disabilities and asnaf (the needy) at an event held at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

His Majesty, who is UPM chancellor presented RM21,000 in donations to 30 UPM students in conjunction with a buka puasa and tarawih prayer event at the UPM mosque.

The event saw 1,000 UPM students and residents from the area present.

The funds were collected through UPM's Zakat Trust Fund.

The UPM management later presented its zakat collection and others funds to the ruler.

UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah handed over zakat amounting to RM8,169,673.67 to the ruler, who represented the state's zakat authority.

The zakat had been collected through a salary deduction scheme and counter collections among UPM staff and its community.

UPM Registrar Muhazam Mansor then presented Sultan Sharafuddin with RM1,250,000 from UPM's Wakaf Ilmu Project.

His Majesty also received UPM's Wakaf Ilmu donations totaling RM 1,979,972.82 from individuals, UPM corporate partners, as well as university staff and students.

UPM's Wakaf Ilmu was established in 2012 to fulfill the needs and to finance the academic activities of the varsity's academic activities, as well as its research and facility developments.

Out of the donations collected under UPM Wakaf Ilmu, RM900,000 would go into upgrading the UPM mosque facilities and RM350,000 would go into a permanent surau project.

His Majesty also received business zakat amounting to RM158,177 from UPM Holdings Sdn Bhd (RM100,000), UPM Cooperative Bhd (RM28,177), and TMJ Mesra Travel & Tours Sdn Bhd (RM30,000).

The ruler received donations from Tabung Haji amounting to RM400,000 for the Wakaf Ambulance Fund to Hospital Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah (HSAAS), UPM.

This also includes a donation of RM35,000 from Pharmaniaga Bhd to UPM as a corporate contribution.

Also present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
