'Give a stern lesson to all who dare to trivialise religion and race issues': Umno Youth calls for continued boycott

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth wants stern action taken against those who trivialise religion and race in the country.

In line with this, Umno Youth chief, Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, called on Muslims to continue boycotting the convenience store, KK Mart, which is embroiled in the controversy of selling socks bearing the word 'Allah.'

"Stay calm and keep boycotting!"The stronger you ask your friends to 'back up' (defend) against the boycott, the stronger the Muslim community will boycott you!

"Continue boycotting, let's give a stern lesson to all who dare to trivialise religion and race issues. This is the time for all of us to stand together," he said in a Facebook post today.

Yesterday, MCA secretary-general, Datuk Chong Sin Woon, reportedly asked Dr Muhamad Akmal not to amplify the issue of socks bearing the word 'Allah' being sold at KK Mart.

Sin Woon was quoted as saying that Dr Muhammad Akmal should not demand Muslims to boycott the convenience store, as such irresponsible actions would only harm the country. The media reported yesterday that Umno Youth gave a two-day deadline to the management of KK Super Mart to install banners at all 881 branches nationwide to apologise for the sale of socks bearing the word 'Allah.'

Dr Muhamad Akmal warned that Umno Youth would intensify the boycott against KK Super Mart if the convenience store management failed to comply with the demands of the movement.

In a social media post yesterday, Dr Muhamad Akmal reiterated Umno Youth's campaign to boycott KK Super Mart by urging the public to check whether the convenience store management had issued the apology statement as demanded by the movement.

On March 13, the issue of socks bearing the word 'Allah' being sold at KK Mart in Bandar Sunway went viral on social media after users uploaded pictures of the product.

Last Wednesday, KK Super Mart & Superstore Sdn Bhd (KK Super Mart) reportedly apologised for the sale of socks branded Miranosock bearing the word 'Allah' at several of its convenience store branches.

The company stated that the sale of the socks had been immediately stopped pending an explanation from the supplier.

The convenience store chain management also requested that consumers refrain from boycotting their business.
