Awas cameras captured 556,055 speedsters last year

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 556,055 notices have been issued for speeding via the Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) cameras nationwide last year, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said most of the speedsters were logged at KM382.8 of the North-South Expressway (Southbound) near Behrang, with 98,911 notices issued between June and December.

"The government and ministry have no plans to increase the existing speed limit, which has been set at 110kph.

"Furthermore, the authority to set speed limits is not the Transport Ministry, but is the jurisdiction of the Works Ministry," he said in response to Sabri Azit (PN-Jerai).

Sabri had asked about the number of speeding motorists captured on speed-trap cameras nationwide, as well as plans to increase the speed limit to 120kph.

Loke said 26 Awas cameras had been installed at accident-prone areas, especially on highways.

"The Road Transport Department found that drivers slow down their vehicles in areas with cameras as notices were put up about two kilometres (km) before the location of the cameras.

"Most drivers will reduce their speed so as not to get caught on the cameras."
